Kelp Gull Steals Penguin Egg For Lunch, Boulders...
While I watched, this kelp gull rolled an African penguin egg out of a nest to an exposed boulder, and pecked at it until the yolk ran out. All in plane view of onlooking penguins. Heart went out to them, I know it was lunch, but nature can be tough.

A Boat House Simonstown, Understated Romantic...
To me Simonstown is childhood memories, naval ships, uniformed soldiers, Nuisance the much loved pup, boulders, beaches, windy weather and penguins. I love it there. And now that I have discovered A Boat House and scuba diving I have added reason to visit.
Situated on the slopes of Red Hill, in a quiet street that offers incredible views across False Bay, A Boat House offers three lovely...

The Colourful Victoria Bathing Huts Of St James!
Last week I had the great pleasure of an overnight in Simonstown. I was meant to take to the waters for my first open water scuba dive but the ocean was too rough for a newbie like me, and I did my touring above ground …..
This included a meander along False Bay with a stopover at St James’ beach, famous for its much photographed Victoria bathing huts. I’d never been on this...

La Boca, Buenos Aires' Most Colourful...
The working class neighbourhoodLa Boca is at the Southern tip of the city, along the Riachuelo Canal. The ‘barrio’ is famous for its houses made up of sheet-iron and painted in different bright colours. The sailors who developed the area in the mid-19th century built their homes from material found in the interior of abandoned ships, using leftover different colour paint from work done...

South African National Gallery Cape Town, Borders...
Yesterday I visited the Borders exhibition for the third time, amazing! Borders is a collection of contemporary photography from Africa and its Diaspora which featured on the Bamako African Photographic Biennale 2009 and is on at the Iziko South African National Gallery. It revolves around the theme of ‘borders’, and includes more than 230 works by 40 photographers and 13 video artists.

West African Effigies Grace This Home!
These life size effigies graced the outside of a home in central Benin; gorgeous, expressive, sad, real. Perhaps their role is to ward off evil spirits, perhaps it is purely decorative, perhaps both.
This woman’s expression touches me so deeply.

Benin's Ouidah, Traded Slaves And A Point Of No...
Ouidah is located in the South of Benin, on the Atlantic Ocean, and from here many slaves were traded by the Portuguese, French and English, each building forts in the city to protect their slaving interests. The Portuguese reached the area in 1580, and their Fort of São João Baptista de Ajudá, now houses a Slave Museum where you can hire a guide for a very informative tour. The Fort remained with...

Open Water Scuba Diving Course With Dive Action,...
I’ve started 2011 with many an ideal, wish and desire, first stop being in the heart of adventure as I sign up for the Open Water Scuba Diving Course with Dive Action, Cape Town. (A cool Christmas Pressie!)
With all study and theory behind me, tomorrow I take to the pool with my PADI Instructor Anthony Martin to learn more. Next week Monday and Tuesday are set aside for my open water dives...

On Saturday evening I had the great pleasure of attending a concert presented by Diemersfontein and their Excellence Out Of Africa Trust, featuring the incredibly talented Njabulo Madlala, Lynelle Kenned and debuting two gorgeous young newcomers Thandeka Ndlovu and Aubrey Pato. They were accompanied by the charming and super talented Prof Kamal Khan, who comes with too many accolades to list....

Wellington's Bains Kloof, Home To Wonderful Walks...
More on Bainskloof Pass after driving and walking in the area yesterday. As mentioned it’s just outside Wellington, and is the 30 kilometres of incredible scenery that joins Wellington and Ceres. It was originally built for horse drawn traffic, was completed in 1853 and was built by Andrew Geddes Bains, the most famous of early southern African road engineers, using mostly convict labour....

Safari Film Legends, Martin And Osa Johnson!
In the 1930s, when the last unexplored regions of the world were being ‘found’, Martin and Osa Johnson, an American couple from Kansas, delighted audiences in theaters with films of their aerial safaris throughout Africa and Borneo. Both pilots and photographers, the Johnsons explored Kenya and Tanganyika in 1933, taking the first aerial photograph of Mt. Kilimanjaro and documenting...

Stony Point In Betty's Bay, Where African Penguins...
If in the Betty’s Bay area I recommend a visit to Stony Point African Penguin Colony. One can still see the remains of the Old Whaling station, which was in operation from 1912 to 1930. Good thing they put a stop to that when in 1976 South Africa signed the treaty to ban whaling.
Today the Point is one of only three land based colonies for the African penguin. The walkway and platform make...

Betty's Bay Beach Front House Sitting A Relaxing...
For New Year, I found myself lucky enough to be part of a house and puppy sitting crew staying in a beautiful beach house in Betty’s Bay. To be honest, I’ve never been much of a Betty’s Bay fan, but I now realise it’s because until Friday, I hadn’t been lucky enough to see the best part of this Overberg village … The rather private beach that leads to Hangklip...

The Law Of The Wild Says Kill Only When You Are...
Photographer Michel Denis-Huot, who captured these amazing pictures on safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara in October last year, said he was astounded by what he saw:
“These three brothers (cheetahs) have been living together since they left their mother at about 18 months old,’ he said. ’On the morning we saw them, they never seemed to be hungry, walking quickly but...
