A few years ago I read a book called Fools Rush In by Bill Carter. In it he recalls his experience in Sarajevo during the Bosnian War. He has no political motivation, actually he’s unsure of the sides and their positions when he first finds himself in Bosnia, but he has heart. In one scene he describes how he dashes through Sniper Alley in Sarajevo, dodging bullets, just to visit two teenage girls who have invited him into their home. He is young and foolish, and does this so that he can see through the eyes of others, can feel their feelings and live their experiences.

He eventually enlists the help of U2 to spread the message of Peace and Love. This is the origin of their Miss Sarajevo, which I watched U2 perform in Cape Town last night with tears shamelessly running down my cheeks. For the words of the song, the craziness of Bill Carter and the many hopeful Miss Sarajevo’s all over the world - then and now.

Its a great book, a story of lost love and adventure. Find it and read it. For now, here are Bono and Pavarotti making much of Miss Sarajevo. I dedicate this to all who make a difference in our complex yet beautiful world, and to those who feel it one made ….
