When in Prince Albert recently I visited Gay’s Dairy for a tour and tasting. Owned by passionate Gay van Hasselt, a visit is mandatory for any cheese lover. Rounds of maturing Prince Albert Royal and Parma Prince line the shelves and there is mozzarella and feta on offer for tasting.
Gay’s cheeses are produced from unpasteurised Guernsey milk, and are guaranteed to be free of hormones, antibiotics, colouring, additives and preservatives. Actually the very happy herd of cows could be seen grazing happily behind the dairy, whilst chickens wandered under foot and the biggest cat I’ve even seen lazed in the sun next to the entrance.
Gay and her team also sell milk, amasi, delicious fat free yoghurts and a selection of fruit juices. Whilst I was there numerous locals came to pick up their milk, such idyllic loveliness.

I am a great admirer of handcrafted producers, and Gay’s Dairy delighted me. I left stocked up with dairy yum for myself and family, and a promise to return soon … Tours are offered by appointment.
Living in the Cape Winelands as farmers and producers of grape spirits, there are certain images that stick in our mind. This is one of them. The annual harvesting of grapes, the carrying of crates and each year the beginning of a journey that takes the juicy fruit to the winemaker and on to distillation and barrel fermentation. Eventually arriving bottled - for true enjoyment. This pic is of wonderful Corneels, foreman on our patch of land in the Ladismith area, the grapes are sweet Hanepoot.
Soooooo excited about our Primitiv Vodka which is in it’s final stages of production ….. these beautiful bottles are waiting to be filled ….. ♥♥
On Friday afternoon 14 May 2010 we made a visit to Napier Brewery, a micro brewery producing wonderful handcrafted ale, lager and stout. This in great support of fellow South African handcrafted products - and those producers that like us at Jorgensen’s Distillery, add a personal touch. We were given an interesting personal tour by Richard, as well as a tasting. Do pop in if ever in the area, and stock up in support. We did - and yum!! www.napierbrewery.co.za
